Yoshimine-dera is located in Oharano, the southwest of Kyoto, and belongs to the Tendai sect. The temple was founded in 1029, by Genzan-syonin when he was 47, and he enshrined Kannon.
Yoshimine-dera was bestowed imperial rank by Emperor Go-Ichijo in 1034, and a member of the Imperial family became the head priest of the temple for generations.
Most of the buildings in the temple were burned down by the Onin War in the 15th century and later were rebuilt by Keishoin, the mother of the 5th Tokugawa Shogun Tsunayoshi, in the Edo period.
Yoshimine-dera is situated on a mountainside and the precincts of the temple is a extensive. Tahodo pagoda rebuilt in 1621, is designated as national cultural properties.
The garden of Honbo

The garden of Hondo was laid out in 1922 by the 7th Ogawa Gihei, a landscape gardener. The Hondo opens at the ervents of the temple, usually it is not open to the public.

An ancient pine tree known as Yuryu-no-matsu, said to be 600 years old, is designated as a natural monument in 1932. The tree is supported two branches extend 20 metres each in opposite directions.
