The Museum of Kyoto is located in the central part of Kyoto. The Museum was opened on October 1st in 1998, as the comprehensive cultural facilities introducing the history and culture of Kyoto.
There are three functions, the exhibition room of the history and the culture of Kyoto, the arts and crafts of modern Kyoto, and the movie hall and the film gallery as permanent exhibitions in the main hall. Special exhibitions are also held throughout the year. And in the building, there are the Museum Shop, restaurants, coffee shops, and various shops.
Between the main building and the annex, there is an elegant coffee shop which was formerly the vault of the Bank of Japan.
The building, the annex of the museum, was built in 1906 and it was used as the Kyoto Branch of the former Bank of Japan until 1965. The building was designed by Kingo Tatsuno, who was the architect of modern ages that represented Japan, and his disciple, Uheiji Nagano. It is one of the typical western-style architecture in the Meiji period. In 1968, the building became the Heian Museum, and the following year, it was designated as an Important Cultural Property. The building was doneted to Kyoto Prefecture in 1986, and it was resored when The Museum of Kyoto was built. And it is open to the public as a part of The Museum of Kyoto.
