It has long been known that Shimogamo-jinja was located in a spot of the great historical significance since before century.
Shimogamo-jinja first built in 678. This shrine, along with Kamigamo-jinja, was regarded by the Imperial Court as one of the most important guardian shrines. Kamo Saiin system (Saio), an Imperial princess served the deity of the shrine, continued for about 400 years from 810 to 1212.
Most buildings in the shrine were built on its present site at the beginning of the 11th century. After the buildings burned down during the Onin War, they were reconstructed in 1628. The 53 shrine buildings are designated as Important Cultural Properties. The present East Hon-den and West Hon-den, which are designated as National Treasures were reconstructed in 1863. They are built in the Nagare style.
Tadasu-no-mori forest surrounding Shimogamo-jinja is a peaceful and relaxing spot. This is a section of primeval, untouched forest and the ages of the trees are over 200 or some over 600 years old. The clear waters of the Mitarashi-gawa run through the shrine grounds.
