Nanzen-ji is located in the easten of Kyoto and is the head temple of the Nanzen-ji school of the Rinzai sect of Zen Buddhism. Nanzen-ji calls Zuiryusan Taiheikoukoku Nanzenzenji officially.

Nanzen-ji was the former imperial villa of the retired Emperor Kameyama, and he converted the villa to a Zen temple with the monk Mukan Fumon (Daimin Kokushi) as its founding abbot in 1291.

After Mukan Fumon died on Dec. this year, the monk Kian Soen became a abbot and constructed the temple buildings for about 15 years.

Nanzen-ji was placed above the five greatest Zen temples of Kyoto in 1385 by Ashikaga Yoshimitsu and the temple influenced on Japanese culture.

In the Muromachi period, the temple declined in power and most of the temple buildings were destroyed by fire during the Onin War. Konchi-in, the sub-temple, was transferred from Takagamine to the present site by Ishin Suden in the first of the Edo period and he reconstructed Nanzen-ji.
