Kayabuki-no-Sato, Kitamura, the village with thatched roofs, is located in Miyama-cho, Nantan-city, Kyoto prefecture. 38 of 50 houses in the village are the constructions of thatched roofs.
This area lies halfway between Kyoto and Wakasa which is located in the side of the Japan Sea. As a lot of travelers had been coming and going on this road in the old days, the construction and the lifestyle of the village are under the influence of various the provinces.
In the village, the house built in 1796 is the oldest house with a thatched roof in existence. Many of houses were built in the end of the Edo period.
This area was designated by the national government as an Important Traditional Building Preservation District in December 1993.
Miyama Minzoku Shiryo-kan

 It remains the form of a middle-class farming house about 200 years ago in this area. The mainhouse and a shed were burned down in 2000, and reconstructed in 2002.
