Kamigamo-jinja is located in the northen Kyoto and calls Kamowakeikazuchi-jinja officially. The deity Kamo-wake-ikazuchi-no-mikoto is enshrined.
In ancient times, Kamigamo-jinja was known as the family shrine of the powerful Kamo clan of Yamashiro. This shrine, together with Shimogamo-jinja (Kamomioya-jinja), is also known simply as Kamo Shrine.
The base of the shrine building was founded in the 7th century, before the Heian period.

Hon-den (main shrine building)
After the establishment of Heian-kyo in 794, Kamigamo-jinja attracted many worshippers among the Imperial Court as a guardian shrine. In 810, Enperor Saga sent his daughter, Imperial princess Uchiko, as Saio to serve the deity of the shrine. Since then this Saio system (Kamo Saiin) continued for about 400 years.
Most buidings in the shrine were built at this location by the beginnins of the 11th century.
Hon-den (main shrine building) and Gon-den (associate shrine building), both National Treasures, were reconstructed in 1863. The other 34 buildings on the shrine grounds were reconstructed in 1628. They are all designated as Important Cultural Properties.
