Kyoto is an ancient city with 1200 years of history. It was established as the capital of Japan, called Heian-kyo, by the emperor Kammu in 794. It remained as the Imperial resident capital for over a thousand years and prospered as the
center of Japanese culture. Even now it continues to strive toward charange and developement.
In December 1994, the 17 properties as Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto were designated in the World Heritage. A great number of tourists, not only Japan, but all around the world, visit this historical city every year.
