Fushimi Inari Taisha is located in the southeast of Kyoto and the head shrine for more than 30,000 Inari shrines all over Japan. The Honden (the main hall) is located at the foot of Inari-yama (mountain) and the whole mountain is the precincts of the shrine.
The shrine is said to have been founded in 711 by Hata-no-Irogu, one of Hata clan.
The principal deity of the shrine is Ukano-Mitama-no-Okami, the deity of the grain harvest. Now the deity of this shrine is also famous as the deity of prosperity in business. A great number of people visit here not only New Year's Day, throughout the year. Foxes are regarded as the messengers for Inari deity, therefore, many fox statues can be found at the shrine.
The Honden was rebuilt in 1499 after it was burned down by the Onin War. It is an Important Cultural Property and called Inari-zukuri, the construction of the Momoyama period. The Ro-mon was built by Toyotomi Hideyoshi in 1589.
Fushimi Inari Taisha is also famous for more than 10,000 torii gates, offered by worshippers. The tunnel of the torii called Senbon-torii is a magnificent view. The gates and shrines continue up Inari-yama for 4 kilometers and it takes about two hours to walk along the whole trail.
